With growing population, Fort Ordinance gets new $38M health centre

A new health centre has been constructed at Fort Ordinance, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) as part of efforts to provide residents with easier access to health services.

The $38 million facility was commissioned on Monday.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony explained that this facility was established in direct response to the growing population size. Already, more than 3,000 people live at Fort Ordinance and with a new housing scheme being established, the population is set to increase further.

“There is population growth in certain areas and we don’t have facilities in those populations.

“When we look across the region, we recognise that there are various gaps,” Dr. Anthony said.

The new health centre boasts many modern facilities. Dr. Anthony said a doctor will visit the centre intermittently.

The new facility is also in keeping with the government’s aim of delivering over 200 health services at community health centres. Dr. Anthony also noted that three other health centres will be constructed in Region Six this year.

Meanwhile, Regional Chairman David Armogan said this the establishment of these health centres are necessary to reduce the patient burden at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital.

With more persons seeking care at facilities in their communities, he believes that patients in serious need will get to access the specialised services at the regional hospital much faster.
