Several doctors from five medical specialties are now equipped to respond to the surgical needs of Guyanese after they underwent a resident training programme offered by the Chinese Medical Brigade.

This is the second batch of doctors to undergo the training under the programme initiated by the Ministry of Health and the People’s Republic of China. The 13 doctors graduated on Tuesday afternoon during a ceremony at the Ministry of Health’s boardroom at Brickdam.

The Captain of the Medical Brigade, Chu Xuehui said the Georgetown Public Hospital now has a surgical training centre.

“This in person face to face teaching approach enhances activities and the efficiency of learning. I believe that each doctor has gained a lot of valuable insights from the training,” the Captain said.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said it is important for doctors to receive the best training possible and as part of efforts to further deepen the cooperation among the two nations, five of the doctors will soon benefit from a post graduate programme offered by China.

“We are going to sign an agreement where we would be sending persons to the University in China so that they can pursue some post Graduate programmes.

“We are sending five persons and hopefully over the years we will be able to expand that,” the Health Minister said.

He is also hopeful that nurses will receive similar training.

Meanwhile, China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan said China and Guyana’s bilateral relations as it relates to healthcare is significant and continues to expand.

The China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation, a Chinese state-owned enterprise commonly referred to as Sinopharm, was selected to construct the six new regional hospitals in Guyana. The medical brigade works at the Linden Hospital, the Georgetown Public Hospital and several health centres.

“With the growing oil and gas sector now Guyana is facing a huge opportunity for economic and social development and the demand for high quality medical resources has increased sharply, China is willing to take this opportunity to make a joint effort with Guyana to promote bilateral cooperation in various fields including health sector and continuously contribute to the high quality of Guyana’s health services,” the Ambassador said.
