Black-eye peas to be cultivated at Kimbia – Minister Mustapha

Guyanese investors will soon commence cultivation of black-eyed beans at Kimbia, Upper Berbice River in Region Ten, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha disclosed on Tuesday.

During a telephone interview with the News Room, the Minister confirmed that the investors have done all the groundwork.

“The investor made the proposal; Lands and Surveys is processing their application for the land.

“Very shortly operation will commence. We have done all the necessary groundwork to put things in place,” Minister Mustapha said.

He also confirmed that the site at Kimbia has rich soil needed for the venture. He said the “area [is where] that crop used to plant long before.”

Black-eyed peas grow best in well-drained loamy to sandy soils. They require a full sun location and shelter from strong winds. The Ministry, along with the private investors, conducted feasibility tests for cultivation.

The government is hopeful that 1,000 acres of land will be used for this venture by year-end.

Through this production, the country is preparing to supply the entire Caribbean region.

Additionally, the government is investing millions into different production areas such as corn and soya.
