President Dr. Irfaan Ali expressed Guyana’s interest in collaborating with Costa Rica on the protection of forests and promoting both food and energy security in the region.

Dr. Ali met Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles on Tuesday.

Following an engagement, both leaders gave brief statements and President Ali highlighted that Guyana was happy to engage in these bilateral talks. He also said the two countries plan to cooperate further.

“I have expressed an interest with his Excellency in collaborating at COP28 on issues of the forest, environment and climate and for us to work closely together to ensure the food and energy security of the region,” President Ali said.

The Guyanese Head of State travelled to the country to receive an award from the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation (IICA) for his leadership on expanding agricultural development and sustainable development in the Caribbean and Latin America region.

Aside from talks with the President of Costa Rica, President Ali also had a lengthy discussion with the directors of IICA. Those talks focused on the ways in which the agriculture research institute can advance the development of Guyana’s expanding agricultural sector.

Dr. Ali also spoke about the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) ambitious food security agenda, wherein the bloc plans to slash its expensive annual food import bill by about 25 per cent by 2025.
