Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali called for a ceasefire in Gaza as he commemorated his country’s 54th anniversary as a Cooperative Republic.

The Head of State gave his Presidential address at a flag-raising ceremony on Thursday night, just before Guyana’s national flag, the Golden Arrowhead, was raised at midnight for the Republic Anniversary.

Threats against Guyana’s sovereignty and development were a huge focus of the President in his address. But he also spoke about Guyana’s commitment to regional development and its desire for peace everywhere, including in the Middle East where there are mounting fatalities because of the Israel/ Palestine conflict.

“…On our 54th Republic Anniversary, we make a call once more to the world that the atrocities in Gaza must come to an end now. The killing must stop now,” the President said.

And in clear terms, he added, “The only solution is a ceasefire and for the two countries to move towards a two-state solution.”

The President reminded Guyanese that the small South American nation has been consistent in its position on the Israel/ Palestine conflict.

Guyana has, for years, called for this two-state solution at various international fora. Such a solution to the Israel/ Palestine conflict would result in an independent State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel.

Guyana was a founding member of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. This committee, established in 1975, functions to promote the rights of the Palestinian people, support the peace process and mobilise assistance.

Earlier this week, argued that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories (the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem) amounts to military conquest and annexation and is illegal per international law.
