In an effort to ensure that advanced healthcare is accessible to inmates, a new pharmacy was on Thursday established at the Lusignan Prison.

The new facility forms part of efforts by the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) to ensure those who are incarcerated are properly looked after.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot visited the new facility on Thursday.

In a press release, the Prison Service said Elliot noted that the goal is to have a 24-hour pharmacy service for prisoners and staff and to provide safe and up-to-date patient-centric services.

“The Prison Director further noted that the pharmacy is part of the service’s commitment to expanding access to high quality healthcare for inmates and staff,” the release noted.

Elliott was accompanied by Officer-in-Charge of the Lusignan Prison Deoraj Gyandat, pharmacist Yashin Wenjajellum and Welfare Officer, Dawn Sumner.

The Lusignan Prison houses over 1,300 prisoners.
