With knowledge gained over the past two weeks, 40 local medical professionals are now better equipped to treat and respond to patients with chronic illnesses and related complications.

The batch was the first to have benefitted from the first Tropical Chronic Disease Research training which was conducted through a partnership between the government and China’s Southern Medical University.

The training, which include both online and in person sessions, was held from May 10 to May 31. It was aimed at enhancing local capacity to prevent, treat, and control tropical chronic diseases.

Delivering remarks at the closing ceremony on Friday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Narine Singh said the training is timely since Non-Communicable Diseases are one of the top areas of priority in Guyana.

The course, Dr Singh said will therefore improve the capability of local healthcare providers to provide better health care to citizens.

“We hope that over the last 20 days, the knowledge you gain…is not just not a certificate but you will implement what you learn.

“We hope to see improvement at the practice of your level; that is where we want to see the changes,” Dr Singh told the participants.

With better primary health care, Dr Singh noted that there can be a reduction in a lot of complications caused by Non-Communicable Diseases.

“As a doctor, learning never ends, it is a continuous process. You always learning something,” he said.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, China has always placed importance on its medical health cooperation with Guyana.

And with Guyana’s rapid economic development and social expansion, she said China is willing to extend cooperation in medical training and technical exchanges.

“The health of the people is a goal which both Chinese and Guyana’s government are striving,” Ambassador Haiyan said.

To this end, she said China is willing to strengthen better health cooperation with Guyana.

“I wish both Chinese and Guyanese medical experts success in your health and your work…I wish the cooperation between China and Guyana will grow and bear more fruits,” Ambassador Haiyan said.

For their successful completion of the training, each medical professional was on Friday awarded a certificate and presented with souvenirs.
