Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha Monday assured Guyanese of the readiness of the local drainage and irrigation network to deal with any potential flooding in the coming weeks.

Guyana’s drainage and irrigation infrastructure is crucial for managing the heavy rains that are common during the rainy season. The system includes a network of canals, pumps, and sluices designed to prevent flooding and protect agricultural lands and urban areas.

The government’s approach aims to mitigate flood risks and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

Mustapha, while engaging reporters at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, said last week’s heavy rainfall led to flooding in some areas.

Though the floodwaters have since receded, Mustapha said the local authorities are ready to deal with more rainfall.

“… we have systems in place like pumps (and) sluices and the outfalls are working. We will continue to monitor the situation,” Mustapha said.

He added: “ I think that generally, we don’t have any major concerns as I am speaking and I am hoping that the system can continue to work as it is working presently.”

Last week, Mustapha flagged some concerns about the management of the drainage network in Linden and Georgetown.

According to him, the local authorities have not maintained the internal drainage network well but the ministry is working alongside residents to clear the drains and keep the pumps operating.
