Guyana Shops to be established at JFK, other int’l airports – Pres. Ali

In an effort to make local products more accessible and boost visibility, the government is aiming to establish a Guyana Shop corner at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, Miami Airport and other large ports across the world.

“We want to see a Guyana shop in the busiest airport in the world. I have already asked the Minister of Tourism to examine the possibility of us… having a Guyana shop at JFK, a Guyana shop in Toronto, Miami where you can pass through and pick up products of Guyana.

“Whether it’s agro-progressing products, whether its hammocks because every product carries a story. It’s the story that attracts persons to products. We are doing a very poor job at telling the story of our products,” President Dr Irfaan Ali recently said.

The President announced the plans as he addressed the Guyana Marketing Corporation’s Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony Tuesday night.

Noting that the government is ready to invest, President Ali said the initiative is one that is being “actively” pursued.

“As a government, we have to embark on buying shelf space and branding space on the international shelves and regional shelves to take our products.

“And we are ready to make that investment. But that investment must be matched with our readiness to up our quality, up our production and to be sustainable,” Dr Ali said.

Already, the Government is working on enhancing brand visibility and shelf space for local products in supermarkets locally.

“We have to find a way in which local supermarkets must not in the back shelf, must in the most prominent shelves carry our local products,” President Ali said.

To date, some 90 Guyana Shop corners have been established across Guyana.
