‘Productive’ talks held for new 2024- 2026 teachers’ agreement

The Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) engaged each other on Thursday, as part of fresh negotiations for a 2024 to 2026 agreement that is expected to support teachers better.
“The meeting, held earlier today (Thursday), was productive and constructive, and both parties are satisfied with the outcome,” a joint press release from the Ministry of Education and the GTU noted.
It was also noted that the two sides will meet again on Thursday, July 25.
These talks- the very first meeting for the new 2024 to 2026 negotiations- came after about two months of teachers’ strike action. The strike ended as both sides went into a conciliation process meant to determine the timeline for which a multi-year agreement should be agreed upon.
The ministry and union eventually agreed on the way forward, that is, that they will negotiate a new multi-year agreement from 2024 to 2026.
