Former President Donald Trump reignited his support for aggressive energy policies at the Republican National Convention (RNC) Thursday night, emphasising the need to bolster the United States’ energy independence through expanded drilling initiatives.

Trump has argued that more drilling would allow him, if elected President, to cut inflation.

In a previous interview with US media he said: “Let’s reduce our dependency on foreign sources of oil, and promote oil-and-gas production at home. Let me make it very clear: Drill, baby, drill – and drill now.”

In Guyana, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who takes the lead on oil and gas for the government, has highlighted that the discovery and development of oil resources are crucial for transforming Guyana’s economy.

While the global shift towards renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower is expected to reduce demand for fossil fuels over time, Jagdeo has argued that there will be heavy demand for oil during that transition period. This transition is driven by efforts to combat climate change and the decreasing costs of renewable energy technologies.

Therefore Jagdeo has said the country can benefit from oil and gas resources in that transition period; Guyana can maximize its oil revenues and invest them in sustainable development projects and other economic sectors.

Jagdeo has pointed out that the revenues from oil can significantly improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and overall living standards for the Guyanese people.

Overall, the government has articulated a long-term vision where the oil wealth will be used to diversify Guyana’s economy. This includes investing in renewable energy, agriculture, and other sectors to ensure that the country does not become overly dependent on oil revenues.

“We’re building 12 new hospitals and upgrading the entire system…. we said in the manifesto, we will build infrastructure for the future that will support economic infrastructure, that will support a diversified economy so that we avoid the Dutch disease,” Dr Jagdeo said at a recent press conference.
