In a bid to address the pressing needs of vulnerable communities across the country, Recover Guyana hosted a highly successful fundraiser last Saturday, aimed at raising funds for its ambitious ‘green hamper’ initiative.

The event, held under the theme: “Without Art, Earth is Eh,” sought to generate critical financial support for the distribution of hampers from October to December 2024.

It will target those most in need, including cancer patients/survivors, senior citizens, underprivileged families, and children in orphanages.

Initially planned for the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel, the event’s overwhelming ticket sales led to a change of venue to the Monument Gardens on Church and Camp Streets, Georgetown.

This move not only accommodated the large turnout but also enhanced the event’s alignment with its environmental theme.

Dave Lalltoo, President of Recover Guyana, opened the event with a call to action. “Recover Guyana has managed to cover 6,069 households per green hampers. Our key objective this afternoon is to raise $5 million. Fortunately, we already made [over $3 million],” he said.

The fundraiser also highlighted SHOUT, an internal project searching for Guyana’s top youth environmental speaker.

The event’s vibrant atmosphere was bolstered by performances from local artists such as young violinist Akeem Adams and singer Jovinski Thorne. Attendees enjoyed a range of prizes, including CPL tickets, a trip to Kaieteur Falls, and an island-hopping tour in the Essequibo River, alongside a bingo competition and fashion contests.

Special guests included Fadeya King, former ‘Miss Earth Guyana’ 2019 and 1st Runner-Up Miss Universe Guyana 2024, as well as contestants from the Miss Guyana Teen Scholar Pageant 2024 and Social Development Director Mr. Jairo Rodrigues.

The event also saw participation from the Guyana National Library Seniors group and various sponsors.

In a Facebook post, Lalltoo expressed gratitude, noting that the event raised $2.8 M.

“We are immensely thankful for the support from our volunteers, sponsors, and everyone involved,” he said.
