In a significant gesture celebrating International Literacy Day 2024, The Literary Coven GY, a local book club dedicated to advancing literacy and fostering a love for reading, donated a substantial collection of books to the National Library.

The donation, made on September 6, aligns with this year’s theme, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace,” and aims to enhance the library’s resources while supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The hand-over ceremony, held at the National Library, featured remarks from Devica Uditram, the founder of The Literary Coven GY.

Uditram, who has been a member of the National Library for over twenty years, expressed her deep appreciation for the library’s pivotal role in her educational journey.

She encouraged young readers to make full use of the library’s extensive collection, which is available for borrowing at no cost.

In a nod to this year’s theme, the book donation included a notable selection of Spanish-language books. Uditram emphasized the value of learning additional languages from a young age, citing it as crucial for developing future global leaders.

The Literary Coven GY’s commitment to literacy extends beyond this donation. The book club recently organized a successful Book Donation Drive, collecting 500 books. These books will soon be distributed throughout Guyana, with a significant portion earmarked for the Rupununi region.

This generous contribution underscores The Literary Coven GY’s ongoing dedication to enriching the nation through literature and supporting the broader goals of literacy and education.
