The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) is beginning a project tonight in front of Parliament Building, in the City, to replace the transmission and distributions lines from Broad to Hadfield Streets and from Hadfield Street to Bank of Guyana.

GWI has often said that the infrastructure in Georgetown is very old, with some of the lines dating back to the 1930s. The replacement exercise will therefore strengthen the system and residents are expected to receive an improved service.

The works are being done strictly at nights, roughly between 20:00 hrs and 5:00 hrs, to minimise disruption to the populace. While the project has a lifespan of three months, Director of Projects at GWI Marlon Daniels is hoping that it will be done in just two, so as to welcome the Christmas season without any further hassles related to traffic.

“We are only working at nights because during the day it will be disastrous to manage traffic. We have all the traffic controls in place, we are working with the Guyana Police Force and the Fire Service,” Daniels told News Room in an interview at GWI.

“Personally, I want by Christmas to be done with that section so that residents can have a Guyanese Christmas again so that we wouldn’t have to be asking them for their patience during the Christmas season when traffic increases tremendously,” he added.

Daniels said the project is in keeping with GWI’s efforts to improve the service that the company gives to customers. “The city is ripe for investments, a lot of development is happening and we want to ensure that we can serve the city to the best of our ability.”

By means of the replacement exercise, the frequent bursting of pipes in this area is expected to be eliminated. (Telesha Ramnarine)
