The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) says in an effort to ensure there is complete water coverage in Regions Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), the company is drilling new wells and upgrading systems all across the regions.

In an interview with the News Room recently, Projects Director Marlon Daniels informed that a new well is being drilled at Port Mourant, the New Amsterdam system is being upgraded, and other wells are on stream for Numbers 56 and 69 villages.

The intention, according to Daniels, is to ensure the regions are left with no gaps when it comes to residents accessing treated water.

“That is as a result of tremendous investments that government would have made. We have never had this type of investment in our company. I’ve been here for 16 years, so this is really exciting times at GWI and we look forward to when these plants are commissioned that the residents can enjoy a better service,” Daniels expressed.

Regarding the coastline, too, he disclosed that by the end of 2024, mid-2025 the latest, the country’s entire coastline – from the Essequibo Coast up to the Corentyne Coast – is expected to be served with treated water by the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) under the Water Treatment Infrastructure Improvement Project.

Notably, among the treatment plants that are to be constructed are those at Leguan and Wakenaam that will ensure both islands receive wholesome water.

Over the last three years, Daniels said the government has made a tremendous amount of money available for the company to invest in treated water coverage across the coastland.
