After a dismal year of production at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), a strong emphasis has been placed on ensuring that the body can meet its targets next year.

Already though, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said some managers at various estates may be moved around while others may be relieved of their duties.

‘Heads will roll’ at GuySuCo if sugar production targets not met in early 2025 – President

“In the new year, we will see some changes in management at various estates.

“We are already contemplating to move managers, some managers will come out of the system… so they themselves, without our intervention, have looked to assign people in the area they can perform better,” Mustapha said.

The minister’s statements follow those made recently by President Dr. Irfaan Ali. The Head of State said “heads will roll” at GuySuCo if targets are not met next year.

The corporation employs thousands of people to work in sugar production. An extended drought and other challenges, Mustapha said, led to the dismal production this year.

He added that the government is lending much support to the corporation. Technical experts from India and Cuba are in Guyana helping to improve operations in the factories and fields.

As such, it is expected that sugar production will be better next year. Mustapha said no less than 100,000 tonnes of the product should be produced.
