Vivekash Persaud, 27, had his lifelong dream come true when the High Court on Friday granted his petition to practice law in Guyana.

What made it more special was that his older brother, Tejprakash Persaud, a lawyer who started his journey in the profession some 15 years ago, presented the petition for admission.

Justice Nigel Niles granted the petition in the presence of close family members and friends.

“For as long as I can remember, being asked ‘What would you like to be when you grow up?’ … Knowing what I wanted to be came to me at a very young age and my response was consistently the same throughout the years: ‘I want to be a lawyer,’” Persaud told the court in his address.

The journey was tedious, demanding and taxing, the former Queen’s College and Hugh Wooding Law School graduate shared.

He thanked the consistent support of his family members, noting that his admission comes on his father’s 74th birthday.

“I will strive to uphold the rule of law, the values and traditions that were set before me. I vow to conduct myself in a manner that is always befitting of an attorney-at-law, to act with integrity, humility and honesty, and not to bring this profession into disrepute,” Persaud said.
