Guyana’s first smart animal hospital is coming to Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and is set to be completed by April 2024.

The animal hospital will be run by Dr. Nardeo Bassoodeo, a highly reputable veterinarian in the industry, and will include 24-hour emergency services. Those services have never been available to animals in Guyana.

This venture is a testament to Dr. Bassoodeo’s love for animals and their health and wellness.

As part owner of Animal Kingdom Pet Care and Veterinary Supplies as well as NB Veterinary Services, he spent enough time in the company of animals to know that such a hospital was needed in this location.

He wants to create this hospital because there are no urgent care facilities for animals and no 24/7 facilities to address emergency needs.

“Too many animals have suffered due to the lack of proper, immediate care,” he said. “This hospital is built to address that gap, offering critical services during off-hours and in emergency situations.”

He later added, “This hospital is the culmination of years of hard work and a lifelong dream to provide advanced, continuous care for pets. I have seen firsthand how animals suffer when immediate care isn’t available, and this hospital will change that for Guyana.”

Situated close to the Guyana School of Agriculture, this animal hospital will utilise student apprenticeships in the veterinary field while professionally addressing animal companions’ needs and high-tech offerings.

The multi-level hospital has it all—from high-tech equipment to a hospital-intrinsic Artificial Intelligence (AI) that uploads every animal’s information into a protected database for future access and treatment. In-house services will be provided for any creature under one roof—from yearly examinations and vaccinations to cancer screenings, pre-surgery clearances, and post-surgical examinations, as well as an isolation chamber for zoonotic and other communicable conditions.

Dr. Bassoodeo explained the purpose behind such advanced technology, stating, “By integrating AI into the process, we can ensure that each pet receives personalised, efficient care. This system will help us track health progress, treatments, and any changes in conditions over time.”

The hospital also has a feline ward, a canine ward, several surgical rooms, even accommodations for Canadians who travel there to help, and a lecture hall for veterinary community continuing education.

“Our goal is to foster a collaborative environment, where both veterinary professionals and students can grow. This facility is designed for the long-term betterment of animal care in Guyana,” Dr. Bassoodeo added.

    And why Mon Repos?

“Mon Repos is an ideal location for this hospital due to its proximity to the agriculture school,” Dr. Bassoodeo explained. “We are creating a space where students can apply their learning in real-world situations, and this interdisciplinary collaboration will strengthen the future of veterinary care in Guyana.”

Such an interdisciplinary relationship between a care facility and an academic institution would serve the training of future veterinarians better, as they’d become accustomed to the needs of pet owners operating in Guyana’s burgeoning livestock industry.
