Six members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are recovering in stable condition following a gunfire exchange during an operation on the Cuyuni River on Monday.

The injured soldiers, including Second Lieutenant Ansel Murray, Sergeants Andre Fraser and Kevon Davis, Corporal Kevin Henery, Lance Corporal Troy Yorrick, and Private Ezra Samuels, were promptly evacuated by GDF air assets on Tuesday morning and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for immediate medical attention.

The soldiers, who sustained penetrating gunshot wounds, received urgent treatment upon arrival at the hospital. Three underwent successful surgeries, with medical professionals reporting that all are now resting comfortably as they continue their recovery.

Tuesday evening, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, alongside Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, visited the injured ranks at the hospital.

The President commended the soldiers for their bravery and resilience in the face of danger, emphasising that their actions exemplified the courage that defines the GDF. During his visit, President Ali also met with the soldiers’ families, offering his gratitude for their unwavering support and reassuring them that the entire nation stands behind them.

He described the day as a proud one for all Guyanese, highlighting the soldiers’ heroic role in defending the country’s territorial integrity.

The GDF also extended its sincere appreciation to the medical team at GPHC, whose quick and professional response ensured the best possible care for the injured ranks. Their expertise has been vital in stabilising the soldiers and supporting their recovery.

Despite the challenges, the Guyana Defence Force says it remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the nation’s security..
