KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is set to begin operations in Guyana on June 4, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the country’s international travel connections. In preparation for the airline’s launch, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill and his team held a pivotal meeting with KLM representatives on Wednesday at the Ministry of Public Works headquarters.

Among the KLM delegation were Regional Manager Dirk Buitelaar, Country Sales Manager for Suriname and Guyana Nalini Kanhai, and Sales Manager for Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao Danilo De Freytas.

The discussions centred on finalising the operational and logistical framework for KLM’s entry into the Guyanese market, with a focus on regulatory compliance, infrastructure requirements, and market strategies.

Minister Edghill expressed his enthusiasm for the new service, noting its potential to significantly boost tourism, trade, and economic development. He also highlighted the added value of more travel options for passengers flying between Guyana and Europe.

“This marks an exciting new chapter in our efforts to enhance international connectivity, particularly with Europe,” said Edghill. “KLM’s entry will provide travellers with greater access to a broad range of destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.”

The airline will operate from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), offering passengers expanded travel options and seamless connections to KLM’s extensive global network.

This new service, in addition to recent improvements in Guyana’s international connectivity—such as new routes to Houston, St Lucia, London, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Colombia—further enhances the country’s global accessibility.

Also present at the meeting were Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Egbert Field, Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Deputy Director General Saheed Sulaman, CEO of Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Ramesh Ghir, and the Ministry’s Head of Legal Services, Sophia Findlay.
