President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Poonai Bhigroog, strongly supports the recent announcement that will see the cancellation of the Berbice tolls from August 2025.

This decision, revealed by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali during a gathering at Babu Jaan in Port Mourant, Corentyne, on Sunday, will undoubtedly bolster economic activity in Region Six.

Mr. Bhigroog emphasizes that eliminating tolls will drastically reduce transportation costs, leading to increased tourism.

“Economically, we will see less in transportation costs, we can see an increase in tourism because if you are to travel from Georgetown to Berbice or vice versa, the removal of the tolls would put more disposable income into tourists’ pocket,” he stated.

Furthermore, he insists that consumers should expect lower prices for goods due to decreased transportation costs.

“In terms of services, we can see people from Region Five coming and working in Region Six, people from Region Six working in Region Five,” he added.

On the topic of education, Mr. Bhigroog insists that students will now have greater access to quality schools in Region Six.

“Education is important, I guess one of the reasons one people Region Five can’t come to the better schools in Region Six, New Amsterdam Multilateral or Berbice High School, the brige told is a cost on them. So the removal will see more students benefit in terms of less transportation costs,” Mr. Bhigroog said.

President Ali has also announced the cancellation of tolls at the Demerara Harbour Bridge and the Linden Bridge, a decisive move that will significantly enhance accessibility and benefit citizens.
