Man charged for disorderly behaviour, assault is not a serving GDF Soldier

 The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Thursday issued a statement clarifying that Marvin Douglas, who is currently facing multiple charges including disorderly behaviour and assault, is not a serving member of the military.

The statement comes in response to a recent newspaper article that mistakenly identified Douglas as a lieutenant in the GDF.

According to the GDF, Douglas has been ‘struck off strength’ (SOS) since July 29, 2013, meaning he has not been an active member of the Force for over a decade.

The clarification follows reports in the media where an attorney informed the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that Douglas was a serving member of the GDF during his appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty on Monday.

Douglas, who is facing charges related to an alleged incident on January 27, 2025, pled not guilty to all charges.

The charges stem from an alleged altercation involving multiple individuals in various locations, including the COLAACO Learning Institute in Cummings Lodge and Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

The GDF emphasized that it is committed to ensuring accurate information is presented to the public, particularly in legal matters, and sought to correct any misconceptions regarding Douglas’s affiliation with the military.
