Parliamentary political parties are calling for an independent, impartial and full probe into the death of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters, who was shot and killed by Police on Monday.

The Sergeant involved in the incident is under close arrest and was moved to Georgetown.

Peters, who Police claimed was wanted for rape, was killed around 17:30 hrs.

CCTV footage shows that Peters was standing by the roadside in the company of a group of men, who were sitting. A heavily-tinted minibus then approached and men in white t-shirt and black pants emerged.

Peters is seen fleeing from the scene and the policemen from the minibus chased after him. Seconds later, a policeman is seen dragging Peters by the neck and taking him to the vehicle.

Police Headquarters in a statement said the police received information that Peters  was spotted at Shabba bar in One Mile. Police headquarters claimed that Peters was wanted for a rape that occurred some time between 1st December 2024 and 31st January 2025.

“As a result, the Sergeant and party of ranks went to that location.  The Sergeant was armed with a 9mm service pistol, and another rank was armed with a .38 service revolver,” Police headquarters.

Police headquarters claimed the ranks “were fully dressed in uniform,” but the CCTV footage shows otherwise.

It was claimed that Peters started to run and attempted to jump a fence.

“It is further alleged by the Sergeant that he managed to pull off Ronaldo Peters from the fence and in the process of subduing him, his service pistol, which was his right hand, went off and Peters was hit,” Police Headquarters said.

Peters was shot to the abdomen.

The Police’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), which looks into the conduct of police officers, has taken up the case.

The main opposition PNCR said it was deeply disturbed by “the excessive and fatal use of force in this incident”, saying It revealed “the brokenness in our security sector.”

“We emphasize our demand for greater accountability from the Government of Guyana. We call for improved training, better oversight, and a renewed commitment to human rights in the conduct of law enforcement in Guyana,” the PNCR stated.

The AFC, which sits in Parliament with the PNCR as a Coaltion of parties, also called for accountability.

“As Lindeners, as citizens, and as human beings, we are outraged,” the AFC stated, as it demanded a “transparent, independent” investigation.
