The Georgetown Mayor and City Council confirmed that the Stabroek and Bourda markets will remain temporarily closed on Wednesday as a precaution following disturbances there and around the country.

During a telephone call with the News Room on Wednesday, the City Mayor Alfred Mentore said the markets were closed on Tuesday due to the sensitive nature of the situation.

Much precaution was taken with the Stabroek Market in particular.

“Yesterday was a very sensitive day so we had to monitor the situation because of the nature of that asset (the Stabroek Market) itself and it’s one of those historical assets that we didn’t want something to happen to cause such a tremendous problem.

“We close it yesterday and we’re monitoring it today. We’ve asked various vendors who have meats and other things there to go and to put things in order, and hopefully by tomorrow we should have it ready,” the mayor said.

On social media, some said the markets were closed without notice.

Younge’s tragic death last week sparked widespread public outcry. Pathologists on Monday confirmed that she died by drowning. After the announcement of her cause of death, there were fiery protests around Guyana, with many still in disbelief. In other instances, there were robberies, looting, and other disturbances.

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force have been able to capture several persons wanted for their actions that incited terror late Monday night and early Tuesday.
