In a bold move to harness the power of fashion as a catalyst for tourism and economic development, the Government of Guyana has announced the creation of a national Fashion Council.

The initiative was unveiled by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a video address to the Origins: Guyana Fashion Festival, signalling a new chapter for the country’s creative industries.

“This event promises to be a vibrant celebration of creativity and talent,” President Ali stated, highlighting the festival’s role in diversifying the tourism sector.

“Fashion has the potential to promote Guyana as a unique destination on the global fashion map.”

The Fashion Council will work in tandem with the government to support local designers, models, and artisans by providing state-of-the-art facilities and marketing platforms. President Ali said the council’s formation aligns with a broader strategy to tap into the global fashion event market, projected to exceed US$200 billion by 2032.

“Hosting fashion festivals is at the forefront of our strategy to diversify and enhance our tourism offerings,” he said. “Fashion festivals are more than displays of art — they are economic drivers that stimulate the hospitality, retail and service sectors.”

The President also announced the opening of the refurbished Railway Yard Courtyard, which will serve as a creative hub for artists and designers. It will be outfitted with equipment and machinery for use by fashion professionals to create and showcase their products.

“We are building the ecosystem to support our creative talents,” Ali added. “This is about job creation, skills development and ultimately transforming Guyana into a thriving hub based on talent and opportunity.”

Festival attendees were also presented with a catalogue featuring the work of all participating designers, including those from the diaspora, reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusivity and international collaboration.
