As part of efforts to improve the country’s medical capabilities, seven local doctors attached at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the West Demerara Hospital, will soon undergo training in the People’s Republic of China.

This is the second batch of doctors participating in the Health Personnel Training Programme, made possible through a collaboration between the Jiangsu Commission of Health, China and Guyana. The doctors are from the general surgery, orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology, pathology and anesthesia fields.

Last year, five doctors benefitted from this three months training programme. On Friday, during a launch ceremony held at the Georgetown Public Hospital, Dr. Du Boxiang, Head of the Chinese Medical Brigade said the doctors will undergo training at the Nanjing Drum Tower hospital, highly recognised hospital in China.

“It’s advances medical equipment and intensive care resources will provide plenty of opportunities for observation, learning and practice,” Dr. Boxiang said.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the doctors have to be trained and prepared before they embark on this programme. The first phase will be theoretical instructions conducted by the medical brigade.

Noting the importance of medical training in Guyana, Robbie Rambarran, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said continuous training and capacity building is vital for progressive healthcare outcomes.

“These programmes will equip our medical professionals with cutting edge knowledge, hands on clinical skills, and the global perspective necessary to meet modern healthcare challenges,” Rambarran said.

The training programme was designed as part of the response action following the COVID-19 pandemic. Lian Jihong, a representative of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) noted that its involvement in programmes like this are efforts made to fulfil its commitment to sustainability and local content development.
