Several residents from Region One (Barima-Waini) are now one step closer to owning their own homes and living independently after being allocated house lots on Tuesday.

They were allocated house lots at Tract ‘A’ Mabaruma, a new housing scheme developed in the region. The allocations were done as the Ministry of Housing and Water held a housing drive in the community on Tuesday.

Among the allottees was Lensil Robinson, a father of one, who has been living with his parents all his life.

“I feel great. I am happy because you get a chance to own something for yourself and if you got children they can inherit it.

“I want build a big house, a dream house,” Robinson told the News Room.

Gena Wells has been waiting for nearly eight years.

“I am very happy because it’s a dream come true.

“I have two children and it would mean a lot to get somewhere, own somewhere on your own,” Wells said, noting that she plans to start building her house soon.

The development of the Tract ‘A’ Mabaruma housing scheme is the second such venture. It consists of 55 residential house lots. The first housing scheme was established at Kokerital Hill, Mabaruma.

In his address to those gathered, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, said the target is to ensure that pending applicants in the system are addressed “as quickly as possible.”

Croal reiterated that all individual who are allocated house lots will have access to their lots before the end of the year.

“We are working nonstop to ensure that we bring betterment to our people,” Croal said.

With efforts ongoing to ensure persons have access to housing, Croal urged allottees to commence construction at the earliest opportunity.

At the “long-awaited” exercise, residents were allowed to apply for house lots and have their queries addressed.

Several residents who have been waiting for more than 10 years also received their land titles.
