MODEC has announced a new partnership with the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) to rehabilitate two animal enclosures at the Guyana Zoological Park, reinforcing its commitment to environmental conservation and community development.

The initiative, valued at $4.5 million, represents a significant investment in the zoo’s infrastructure, aimed at improving the living conditions of the animals and enhancing the visitor experience.

The first phase of the project, now completed, involved the refurbishment of an enclosure that houses black caimans, spectacled caimans, and giant river turtles. Preparations are currently underway for the second phase, which will focus on the enclosure designated for macaws, powis, agoutis, Spix’s guans, and a tiger heron. The works form part of a broader Zoo Rehabilitation Project being undertaken by the PAC.

Speaking on the partnership, Rafael Fumis, MODEC’s Country Manager in Guyana, said the company is proud to support such an important initiative.

“This vital initiative underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement in Guyana. By enhancing key institutions that promote conservation, education, entertainment, and the appreciation of wildlife, we aim to make a meaningful impact,” he noted.

Chairman of the Protected Areas Commission, Mr. Robert Persaud, also welcomed the collaboration.

“Rehabilitating these enclosures ensures the well-being of our wildlife and enriches the visitor experience. We appreciate MODEC’s support and look forward to future collaborations,” he said, adding that the renovations are aligned with the Commission’s wider plans for the zoo’s modernisation.

This partnership marks another step in MODEC’s ongoing efforts to support environmental sustainability and invest in the communities where it operates.
