Over one million passenger movements were recorded at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) for the year so far up to the beginning of June 2025, a 15 per cent increase when compared to last year.

“Traffic has grown significantly over the years by 300 plus per cent since 2020.

“Last year we had 856,000 passengers that travelled through Cheddi Jagan International Airport. This year we have grown by 15 per cent so far but as a country… We have already pass a million passengers,” Chief Executive Officer of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Ramesh Ghir recently told the News Room during an interview.

Airline traffic has also grown by 5 to 6 per cent, Ghir said.

“For Guyana, we have been going double digits for the past four years. So the growth is very significant, and that is why we have to plan ahead,” Ghir noted.

To enhance the system’s ability to withstand this growth, Ghir told the News Room that work is ongoing to enhance the infrastructure at the country’s main port of entry.

This includes a second terminal, which is expected to be constructed soon, and the recent digitization of the immigration system for both arriving and departing passengers.

With the upgraded immigration system, Ghir said about 80 percent of passengers are able to process through the immigration area within an average of about 20 seconds upon arriving at a kiosk.

The works at CJIA are being done under the airport expansion project.
