Guyanese warned of consequences for unlawful entry, residency in the United States

Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Wednesday issued an advisory alerting all Guyanese nationals to a diplomatic note received from the United States Government, warning of serious legal consequences for individuals attempting to enter or remain in the U.S. unlawfully.

According to the official communication from Washington, the U.S. Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strict immigration enforcement, following the reinstatement and expansion of several policies under President Donald Trump’s administration. The Secretary of State of the United States has emphasised a renewed focus on prosecuting cases of illegal entry, overstaying visas, and other immigration-related offences committed by foreign nationals.

The Ministry noted that while the U.S. continues to welcome lawful travellers, those without proper documentation or who breach the terms of their entry risk severe penalties. These include arrest, prosecution, imprisonment, and hefty fines.

“All Guyanese nationals are strongly advised to comply with U.S. immigration laws and avoid any attempt to enter or remain in the country unlawfully,” the Ministry stated.

Additionally, Guyanese citizens currently residing in the United States without legal status are “strongly advised to depart immediately,” the advisory said, reinforcing the need to follow authorised channels for migration, education, employment, and travel.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it remains committed to protecting the interests of all Guyanese abroad, but urged nationals to act responsibly and within the boundaries of the law when travelling to or living in the United States.
