Immediate action by firefighters prevents disaster at Berbice School

Quick and decisive action by firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station successfully averted a potential disaster at the Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) on Monday afternoon.
The New Amsterdam Fire Station received a call at approximately 17:09 hours, prompting a rapid response involving three units—two fire tenders and an ambulance.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald told reporters that upon arrival, the crew observed smoke billowing from the institution’s canteen. Demonstrating their expertise, the firefighters forcefully gained entry and extinguished the fire, effectively preventing extensive damage.
McDonald confirmed that while the wall sustained minor damage, the team’s swift intervention ensured the situation was quickly brought under control.
He identified the cause of the blaze as a deep fryer filled with oil that had been left unattended by an attendant.
