In a major blow, Opposition Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir has officially resigned from the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).

Her resignation comes just days after a critical meeting with party leader and Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton to discuss her role in the upcoming 2025 General and Regional Elections. According to a statement issued by the PNCR, Walton-Desir had sought assurances that she would be extracted from the party’s list to serve again in the National Assembly and asked for clarity on her campaign responsibilities.

The PNCR contends that Norton provided those assurances. He reportedly confirmed that Walton-Desir would be appointed to Parliament and would serve as part of the campaign management team in the event of an APNU government. The party further stated that she was invited to bring a representative to the meeting but declined, and instead of responding after consulting her team, she submitted a resignation letter.

The party has since accused Walton-Desir of misrepresenting the facts in her public resignation, particularly her claim that no offer was made regarding her role. “This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts,” the PNCR said in a strongly worded statement. “The Party finds it necessary to correct this inaccuracy and is therefore placing this clarification in the public domain.”

Despite the disagreement, the PNCR expressed gratitude to Walton-Desir for her service and wished her well in her future endeavours.

Walton-Desir, a vocal and high-profile opposition MP, is expected to address the public at a press conference on Wednesday morning, where she will offer more details about her resignation and her future political direction.
