Some infrastructure in place, should gov’t opt for train system 

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government is considering a train system, and should this project go ahead, President Dr. Irfaan Ali says some infrastructure is already in place.

The President spoke about his government’s infrastructure plans on Monday night, at the commissioning ceremony for the new Ogle to Eccles Highway.

At that event, he highlighted the development of a third roadway along the East Coast of Demerara; this newer linkage is being built along what is now considered the backlands. However, Dr. Ali also noted that a secondary “hard surface road” alongside this new roadway, capable of facilitating a new train system.

“I am advised that that foundation is capable of taking off a train system.

“So when we talk about a train or tram system, the infrastructure is already being built,” President Ali said.

Days ago, PPP General Secretary and Guyana’s Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo acknowledged that public transportation requires some attention.

So he said the party is once again looking at a system it first mulled years ago. That system involves a light rail connection between Golden Grove and Diamond, where about 300,000 people reside.

That system could be complemented by an electric tram system in Central Georgetown, allowing people to travel through the city with ease.
