From dialysis support to specialised care, new Enmore Regional Hospital to bring major relief to East Coast 

The new Enmore Regional Hospital was commissioned on Friday night by Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, allowing thousands of East Coast Demerara residents to get much-needed health services closer to home.

“We are opening a door to the future, we are raising the curtain on a new era of healthcare

“This hospital is part of a larger vision, a vision of a Guyana where every child, every mother, every patient, regardless of their income or address, has access to high-quality, modern, and people-centred healthcare,” President Ali declared in his address to the mammoth crowd gathered at Enmore.

The hospital features 75 inpatient beds in private, air‑conditioned rooms; two state‑of‑the‑art operating theatres; a 24/7 Emergency Department;  CT/X‑ray machines; ultrasound imaging; full-service labs; and dialysis machines.

Patients can access a myriad of services, including gynecology, audiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, psychological support, and general medicine services.

According to Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, over 1,000 persons will be working at the facility. It is expected to serve thousands of residents across the East Coast corridor, reducing the need to travel to Georgetown for healthcare services.

Like the President, Dr. Anthony said the government is focused on vastly improving healthcare in Guyana.

The Enmore facility was built in collaboration with China’s Sinopharm International and is part of a broader $37.2 billion national health infrastructure project, which includes new hospitals in Lima, De Kinderen, Diamond, Bath, and Skeldon. The Diamond Hospital was opened recently.

Beyond the coast, hospitals are also being built in Moruca, Kamarang, Kato, and Lethem, alongside a Paediatric and Maternal Hospital at Ogle and a modern facility in New Amsterdam. Major upgrades are underway at existing hospitals in Bartica, Linden, and West Demerara.

The government’s goal is not only to improve access but also to standardise care across all regions. From matching equipment to consistent medical protocols, the aim is to provide seamless and sustainable healthcare nationwide.

Complementing these upgrades is a massive investment in training, with over 6,000 nurses expected to be trained in the next five years. New nursing schools have already opened in Regions Two, Six, and 10.
