New $708 million Industry polyclinic to serve thousands 

The sod was turned for a new $708.6 million polyclinic at Industry, East Coast Demerara, on Friday. This facility will replace the existing health centre and serve thousands of residents from the community and surrounding villages.

The project is being executed by Satar Mohamed and Sons Construction and Hardware Supplies, with Innovative Engineering Consultancy Services as the consultancy firm. It should be completed by July 2026.

According to the doctor-in-charge of the Industry Health Centre, Dr. Saskia Sertimer, the new facility will expand primary healthcare services. X-ray, ultrasound, dentistry, and physiotherapy services will be offered at the new facility.

Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Robbie Rambarran, said specialised lung care services may also be offered here. The Industry Health Centre falls under the management of the GPHC.  And it was Rambarran who emphasised the need for the facility.

He said the existing facility, which sees about 2,100 patients monthly, experienced several additions over the years to cater to the growing demand for healthcare. So, the decision was made to build the new polyclinic.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said the government is investing heavily in the expansion of the local healthcare sector.
