The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is assuring its employees and the wider public that it is actively working to address the long-standing issue of wage and salary “bunching” within the sugar industry.

The matter, described as a “general question” affecting employees across the sector and not confined to any single estate, has drawn the attention of the industry’s main representative bodies. Formal negotiations between GuySuCo and the trade unions will commence in the coming week, with the first meeting between the Corporation and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) scheduled for Thursday, 14 August 2025, GuySuCo said in a statement.

The issue came to a head earlier this month when workers at the Albion Estate staged strike action on 5 and 6 August. GuySuCo’s management subsequently met with the striking employees, assuring them that the matter would be addressed as a priority.

Both GuySuCo and the unions have publicly committed to finding a resolution in the shortest possible time, noting that the workers remain “valued partners” in the industry’s success.

“Workers are central to the continued success of the sugar industry,” the Corporation said, signalling a willingness to work closely with union leaders to restore stability and trust across estates.
