Tapakuma Lake gets new $25.3 million nursery school

To advance universal access to early education, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand on Tuesday commissioned a new $25.3 million nursery school at Tapakuma Lake, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

The school was built to accommodate 17 children.

Manickchand stressed that every village deserves its own facility.

“Many would have consider it unworthy, undeserving of a separate nursery school because it is only 17 children. To us, each child counts,” Manickchand said.

Previously, nursery-aged children shared a classroom within the primary school building.

The new structure, Manickchand said, will serve hundreds of children in the years to come, ensuring they begin their education in a space designed specifically for their developmental needs.

“We are here to serve you, meet your needs.

“We don’t only believe in building schools, we believe that once the children get into the schools they must have a high quality of education,” Manickchand said.

Over the past three and a half years, the government has constructed 67 new nursery schools across Guyana, adding to the more than 420 already in existence.

Manickchand noted that this expansion is accompanied by measures to improve quality, including deploying trained teachers and providing support such as the “Because We Care” cash grant, free textbooks, and the breakfast programme

Earlier Tuesday, Manickchand also commissioned the $23.7 million Mashabo Nursery School, underscoring the administration’s commitment to ensuring that children, regardless of where they live, have access to quality early education.
