A state-of-the-art secondary school was commissioned on Wednesday in Waramuri, Region One, bringing modern facilities and new opportunities for hundreds of students in the hinterland community.

This school was built at a cost of $400 million; amenities include modern laboratories and technology-integrated classrooms. It will house over 250 children.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand announced that the government has either completed or is in the process of constructing 42 secondary schools nationwide.

“Providing education to our people, whether they are rich or poor, is very important to us.

“This school will allow all of your children to become whatever they want to be…will allow your children equal opportunity even as they enjoy your love and guidance,” Manickchand said.

Manickchand said there were 25,000 children in Region One in 2020 who could not be placed in a secondary school. By the end of 2026, every single child will be able to attend a secondary school near their home, the Education Minister noted.

Highlighting broader efforts, she noted that in addition to expanding access, the government is focused on enhancing the quality of education through improved teacher training.

Meanwhile, in his address to those gathered, President Dr Irfaan Ali said significant investments are being made in the sector as education plays a vital role in national development.

“This building is not only a secondary school; it’s the staging ground for the rest of your life,” the President noted.

He said the education system is being built to cater for every section of the population so they can utilise opportunities and contribute to the development of the country.

“We are investing so that we can have a more efficient population that can enjoy the full fruit of their labour,” President Ali said.

The commissioning of the Waramuri secondary school aligns with the government’s vision of ensuring that every child, regardless of their location, has access to quality secondary education.
