The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), which is seeking re-election, is confident that nurses and other healthcare workers who left Guyana in search of better salaries will return to capitalise on the developments here.

Better salaries and other benefits for local workers have been a key promise for party representatives on the campaign trail. On Wednesday night, as the party engaged a sizable crowd in Alexander Village, Georgetown, that promise was reiterated.

“… all the nurses who left, they are going to come back because what we are going to give our nurses here, it won’t make (any) sense for them to be anywhere else,” President Dr. Irfaan Ali said.

Dr. Ali is returning as the party’s Presidential Candidate.

Since 2020, under his administration, there has been rapid infrastructure expansion in the healthcare system. Four new hospitals are being built; eight more are under construction.

To meet the growing demand for services, about 6,000 healthcare workers, including nurses, are needed. In the interim, the government has greenlighted the hiring of foreign nurses.

The President, however, reminded people that the government is funding massive training programmes and in the years to come, more locals will get jobs. He is also banking on salary adjustments and increases, alongside other benefits, to attract Guyanese workers who have gone overseas.

More salary adjustments for health workers by year-end – Pres. Ali
