Team Guyana added to its medal tally at the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion, Paraguay, securing bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay on Monday evening.

The quartet of Malachi Austin, Narissa McPherson, Simeon Adams, and anchor Keliza Smith combined to clock 3:22.30, finishing behind Brazil (3:19.98) and Cuba (3:21.01) while holding off Jamaica (3:23.07) for third place.

The result marked Guyana’s second Games medal following a bronze by swimmer Raekwon Noel.

Earlier in the evening, Smith narrowly missed advancing to the women’s 100m final after placing fourth in her semi-final.

She clocked 11.45s, just a hundredth of a second behind Jamaica’s Serena Cole (11.44s), who sealed the third qualifying spot.

Puerto Rico’s Frances Colon won the semi-final in 11.32s, with Colombia’s Laura Martinez second in 11.39s.

Austin will run today in the semi-final two of the men’s 400m from 17:40h.

In the field events, Anisha Gibbons placed fifth in the women’s javelin, recording a best throw of 47.13m.

The competition was dominated by Colombia’s Valentina Barrios, who set a new meet record with 60.16m.

Uruguay’s Manuela Rotundo claimed silver with 57.44m, while Cuba’s Claudia Guerrero (48.41m) got bronze.
