Smith secures 200m bronze for Guyana at Junior Pan Am Games

Keliza Smith clinched a bronze medal for Guyana, finishing third in the women’s 200m final at the junior Pan American Games in Paraguay.

Smith crossed the line in 23.42 seconds, adding to her nation’s medal haul and cementing her place as one of the country’s most promising young track stars.

Liranyi Alonzo of the Dominican Republic took the gold, setting a new championship record with an impressive time of 22.69, while Colombia’s Marleth Ospino secured the silver at 23.14.

Smith’s journey to the podium was highlighted by a dominant performance in the semi-final, where she set a new season’s best of 23.08 seconds.

That time brought her tantalizingly close to Brenessa Thompson’s 2017 national record of 22.94, underscoring her potential for future success.

Smth’s bronze is the third for Guyana following strong showings from swimmer Raekwon Noel and the 4x400m Mixed Relay team.

The country’s medal prospects remain alive, with hopes resting on Stafon Roach in the triple jump and the men’s 4x400m relay team later in the competition.
