Guyana to host historic Caribbean Women’s Basketball Championship

The Caribbean Women’s Basketball Championship is set to make a historic return to the region, with Guyana being awarded the hosting rights for this year’s tournament.

The event, which has not been staged since 2018, will be held from November 9-17 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.

The announcement, made by the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), signals a major vote of confidence from FIBA in the country’s ability to host international sporting events.

GBF President Michael Singh stated that Guyana is “ready to host the championship,” noting that the federation has been working diligently over the past few years to earn this recognition.

Ten of the top basketball nations in the Caribbean are expected to compete for coveted spots in the Women’s CentroBasket Tournament, a crucial qualifier for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

The GBF, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana and the National Sports Commission, will immediately begin preparations for the event.

A special focus will be on upgrading the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to meet international standards.

A Local Organising Committee (LOC) will also be established to oversee the tournament’s execution.

This year’s championship holds special significance for Guyana, as the nation’s women’s team has a storied history in the tournament.

In 1996, the Guyanese women captured their country’s first-ever Caribbean title after defeating Jamaica in the final of the then CARICOM Basketball Championship in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The team was led by Head Coach Linden ‘Sancho’ Alphonso and featured standout player Karen Abrams.
