A new eco-friendly tourism product has been added to Destination Guyana with the launch of RideAlong GY’s cycling experience at the Botanical Gardens, Georgetown, on Sunday. The initiative offers bicycle rentals for locals and tourists in a safe, designated space, allowing visitors to enjoy the historic gardens without the risks of road traffic.

The launch was attended by Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues; Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh; President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mitra Ramkumar; and outgoing European Union Ambassador to Guyana, Rene Van Nes.

Founder and CEO of RideAlong GY, Sherry-Ann Greene, said the service was developed in response to years of requests from customers seeking a safe cycling option. “The project was birthed from wanting more for the community; to have a safe space where people can bring out their children,” she explained, adding that the initiative encourages healthy recreation while promoting wellness.

Ambassador Van Nes commended the venture and donated 5,000 flexibands, which illuminate at night, to support safe and enjoyable evening rides.

    Tourism Beyond Hotels

Minister Rodrigues praised Greene for her entrepreneurial vision, describing the initiative as aligned with government’s strategy to diversify and strengthen the tourism sector. She noted that while Guyana has experienced significant growth in hotel development, the future of the industry lies in creating memorable experiences.

“The tourism ecosystem is not just about hotels,” the Minister stressed. “Tourism is broader—it encompasses experiences, entertainment, tours, cultural encounters, and even the ways in which visitors interact with our communities. Our framework must offer opportunities for them to explore our natural beauty and participate in recreational activities.”

She further emphasised the importance of making such experiences both affordable and of high standard to ensure visitors keep returning to Guyana.

    Building a Holistic Tourism Ecosystem

Rodrigues said government will continue to encourage and support innovative business ideas that expand the national tourism product. She added that collaboration among hotels, tour operators, guides, and other service providers is critical for Guyana to develop into a world-class destination.

“This is not just about cycling,” she explained. “It is about creating unique opportunities to experience Guyana from a fresh perspective, promoting healthy outdoor activities, and strengthening our national tourism product. Projects like this reflect the vibrancy of our people and the innovation within our sector.”

Greene, whose business benefited from the Ministry’s Small Business Green Tech Fund Grant, said RideAlong GY represents how small ventures can grow into sustainable enterprises with the right support.

The cycling experience at the Botanical Gardens is expected to enhance Georgetown’s tourism offerings, providing visitors with a fun, environmentally friendly way to enjoy one of the city’s iconic green spaces, while contributing to the broader push to position Guyana as a leading eco-tourism destination.
