Minister of Education Sonia Parag has underscored the national importance of timely and quality completion of Guyana’s first dedicated School for the Deaf, now under construction at Cummings Lodge.

During a site visit on Saturday, Minister Parag told the contractor that the project must be delivered to the highest standard, describing it as a “model of excellence for inclusive education in Guyana.” She expressed confidence that the facility, currently on schedule, will be completed by November 2025, and assured that her Ministry will continue monitoring progress until the doors officially open.

The G$194.4 million project is being executed by Superior Supplies and General Construction. Once finished, the school will accommodate 30 deaf learners in a modern, purpose-built environment designed to meet their educational and developmental needs.

Beyond classrooms, the facility will function as a resource hub for deaf youth, offering programmes to promote inclusivity, personal growth, and community engagement.

Minister Parag emphasised that the school delivers on government’s commitment to creating inclusive, equitable, and empowering spaces for all learners, marking what she described as a “transformational milestone” in Guyana’s education sector.

She was joined on the visit by Permanent Secretary Shanielle Hoosein-Outar, Dr. Keon Cheung, Assistant Chief Education Officer with responsibility for Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and Gerron Parker, Head of Buildings at the Ministry.

With completion just weeks away, the project is being closely watched as a symbol of Guyana’s pledge to ensure no child is left behind.
