Guyana focuses heavily on production of hatching eggs

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has unveiled plans for hatching egg production at Pakuri Village, through a large-scale investment with the private sector.

In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, the minister said plans are moving ahead with plans to become fully self-sufficient in hatching egg production.

“We are now moving to do a massive investment with the private sector in hatching egg production. The tunnel, houses them that we’ll be using. They are on its way to Guyana.

“Land clearing has already started [at Pakuri] and Dr. Dwight Waldron [the Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority] has been working with the private sector to move this process forward. So in a very short space of time, you will see massive transformation in that sector,” Minister Mustapha said.

The initiative aims to promote sustainable local production, satisfying local demand and reducing the country’s reliance on imported hatching eggs.

Currently, Guyana uses about 53 million hatching eggs each year, the majority of which are imported. Minister Mustapha said the new project is designed not only to meet domestic demand but to eventually supply the wider Caribbean market.

“As I said, we will be investing in terms of being self-sufficient in Guyana. I’m hoping that with this project that we are about to launch, we will surpass that demand and will also export into the Caribbean market,” he said.

The initiative will feature modern poultry infrastructure, including tunnel houses that allow better climate control for hatcheries. Land preparation in Pakuri has already begun, with support from the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) and private partners.

Already, the limited hatching egg operations are being expanded, but this new large-scale investment marks the most significant step yet toward cutting import costs and building a sustainable poultry supply chain.
