Almost 92 percent of teachers in Guyana’s hinterland teachers are now trained, Education Minister Sonia Parag said recently.

A total of 1,345 teachers gradated this year from the Cyril Potter College of Education’s (CPCE).

“The percentage of trained teachers in the hinterland after this 2025 graduation will be close to 92 percent.

“We are moving towards that finish line of accomplishing 100 percent trained teachers,” Minister of Education, Parag revealed on Friday.

Speaking at the CPCE graduation, Parag said the progress reflects the ministry’s continued push to ensure that every classroom across the country is staffed by trained educators.

A total of 1,345 teachers graduated from CPCE in 2025, bringing the number of trained teachers to approximately 68 percent since 2020.

This year’s graduating class includes 164 teachers from Region Two, 169 from Region Three, 304 from Region Four, 119 from Region Five, 35 from Region Seven, 23 from Region Eight, and 75 from Region Nine.

Parag highlighted that since 2020, the number of trained teachers has risen steadily—from 509 in 2020, to 1,837 in 2023, and 1,501 in 2024—bringing the total number of trained graduates to 6,083.

She also disclosed that 1,456 students have registered to begin their studies at CPCE this year.

“We look forward to seeing your results of nurturing our young minds.

“The country cannot transform without our human capital, which is our most valuable asset, transforming with it,” Parag told the graduates.

The government has an ambitious goal of ensuring that all teachers are trained. To achieve this, teachers’ training has vastly expanded over the past five years.
