Every connection on Earth begins with one simple thing — location.

At ENet, that simple idea is transforming how we see, plan, and connect our world. This GIS Day, ENet is celebrating the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) — a digital technology that turns complex data into clear insights, helping people and businesses across Guyana make smarter decisions.

“GIS is about more than maps — it’s about people, possibilities, and progress,” says Athena Ali, GIS Department Coordinator at ENet. “We’re building a system that anyone can use — as easy as opening a web browser — to explore data-driven maps that show what’s happening across our country.”

With ENet’s fully integrated GIS platform, no special software or training is required for most end users. Users can access geographic data through an intuitive, web-based system that unites information from various sectors — from infrastructure and environment to business and asset planning.

“A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a map is worth a thousand pictures,” Athena adds. “When we visualize data on a map, we see what others can’t — how things connect, change, and impact one another. That understanding helps us act faster and plan smarter.”

Athena, who spent a decade working in Canada’s GIS sector before joining ENet, brings extensive experience from the City of Mississauga’s geospatial team, and major railway transit projects across the Greater Toronto Area. She now leads ENet’s initiative to make GIS accessible, engaging, and impactful for everyone, promoting a data-driven and digitally empowered Guyana (Press release)
