Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., Kesh Nandlall, has given the assurance of a reliable electricity supply throughout the Christmas holidays, noting that the company is in a strong position to meet seasonal demand.

Nandlall explained that GPL has been carrying out extensive maintenance across its network in recent weeks and while he apologised for the inconvenience, he also stressed that these activities were necessary to ensure a dependable power supply during the festive period.

“We have been doing a lot of maintenance work and which requires some amount of outages and we apologise for that. We need to do these maintenance works so that we can have reliable power and distribution for the holiday season,” Nandlall told reporters during a recent engagement.

The CEO highlighted that GPL’s highest annual demand typically occurs around September and October. This year, the peak demand reached 221 megawatts.

“Right now we have available in the system, reliably about 250 megawatts.  Christmas is not really our peak and that is something we need to clarify, the peak is in the hot season which is September – October,” Nandlall explained.

Looking ahead, he noted that the highest demand during the holiday period usually falls on Old Year’s Night. GPL projects that this year’s holiday peak will fall between 210 and 250 megawatts, well within the company’s available generation capacity.

“So from a generation perspective, we are in a very comfortable position,” Nandlall stated.
