Trinidad PM distances country from US military action in Venezuela, reaffirms peaceful ties

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar has made it clear that her country is not involved in ongoing United States military operations in neighbouring Venezuela, following confirmation from Washington that a large-scale strike was carried out early Saturday morning.

In a brief statement issued on Saturday, January 3, Persad-Bissessar said the United States had commenced military operations within Venezuelan territory earlier that morning, but stressed that Trinidad and Tobago is “not a participant in any of these ongoing military operations”.

The Prime Minister further underscored that Port of Spain continues to maintain peaceful relations with the people of Venezuela, signalling Trinidad and Tobago’s intention to remain neutral amid rapidly unfolding developments in the region.

The clarification comes after United States President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had conducted a large-scale military strike in Venezuela. According to Trump, the operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
