As attempts to stop vendors from encumbering the pavement and entrances for business places become more rampant, PPP/C Councillor Alfonso De Armas has said an ‘earnest’ solution is needed for vendors.

After the vendors at Yhip’s Bakery were removed from the area on Sunday, the concerns grow with a need for a solid relocation plan for vendors. De Armas on Monday said the PPP/C councillors are concerned because recommendations were previously ignored.

“We are tired of the livelihood of the vendors being politicised. They are used as political pawns by the majority-run PNC council. Unfortunately, we as the PPP councilors, are in the minority and while we can recommend very often our recommendations are not carried out. There needs to be a final solution to the issue,” he said.

De Armas said vending is an important source of livelihood for many people and its time to stop using the vending issue as a political issue and instead “work earnestly to arrive at a solution that will ensure the livelihoods of our vendors but that the law is followed.”

On Monday during a special council meeting, Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentore said the council will have to consult with vendors soon concerning the issue. The expansion of several market areas has been one consideration highlighted to facilitate more vendors.
